Remembering Justice, former House Speaker Tim Armstead

Kanawha County, WV (WOAY) – The West Virginia Supreme Court of Appeals has confirmed the death of Justice and former House Speaker Tim Armstead.

Armstead passed away following a brief hospitalization at the age of 60.

Armstead was appointed to the court in 2018 by then-governor Jim Justice. He won the election in 2018 and again in 2020. Before his time on the court, he was a long-time lawmaker, elected Speaker of the House of Delegates in 2015.

In a press release, Armstead was remembered by his fellow justices as a man of integrity, kindness, and leadership.

Armstead was born in Charleston and graduated from Braxton High School. A resident of Elkview, he is survived by his wife Anna, his daughter and her husband, and two grandchildren.

Leaders around the state have released statements, mourning the loss of Armstead.

Senate President Randy Smith said that Armstead led with grace. Speaker Roger Hanshaw said Armstead’s life showed his deep faith and conviction. Treasurer Larry Pack said Armstead was a principled conservative who had West Virginia’s best interests at heart. Auditor Mark Hunt said Armstead leaves a legacy of fairness and humility. Senator Shelly Moore Capito said he was a devoted family man.

Governor Patrick Morrissey said Armstead was dedicated to the rule of law and West Virginia.
