Thrill-seekers get ready for Bridge Day 2024

FAYETTE COUNTY, WV (WOAY) – This October 19 people from all over the world will converge again on the New River Gorge for the thrill of a lifetime.

2024 is the 45th anniversary of the iconic tradition that is Bridge Day.

“We are full-on vendors. We’ve got over 200 vendors here — signed up, ready to go; food, arts and crafts, woodworking, clothing, a little bit of everything,” said FCCC, NRGCVB, Bridge Day executive assistant Tim Naylor. “We’re currently taking up base jumper registration. We’ve got almost 200 base jumpers registered. And then we’re just looking for a beautiful sunshine day.”

If you’re a base jumper, you can’t pass up this once-in-a-lifetime experience.

“Coming from all over the country and a few from Canada, Brazil, Europe,” Naylor said. “This is the only day it’s legal to base jump in a national park so that is what makes it such a draw.”

Walking through is a colorful vision of sight and sound. Bridge Day draws people together, much like a family reunion for many.

“Getting to watch the base jumpers and the repellers do their thing; but also, just getting to see the people and check out the vendors,” said Naylor. “People who used to live here come back, people who live here — they stay just to check out this event.”

Base jumping off the New River Gorge Bridge is everything.

“To be able to do it in a national park legally without any repercussion is a big deal for a lot of people,” Naylor said.
