WOAY – Princeton shortstop Wander Franco was named Appalachian League Player of the Year Thursday.
Franco, who was a two-time Player of the Week in 2018, currently leads the Appalachian League in four categories, including batting average (.374) and RBI (56). He has recorded a hit in 47 of 55 games played, including a 25-game hit streak.
Rays manager Danny Sheaffer was named the league’s Manager of the Year, after leading a turnaround for a club that finished toward the bottom of the East Division standings in 2017. Both Princeton and the Bluefield Blue Jays have already clinched playoff berths with a week to play in the regular season.
Franco is joined on the Appalachian League All-Star team by Rays teammates Roberto Alvarez, Connor Hollis, and Jordan Qsar. Bluefield is represented on the team by Alejandro Kirk, Cal Stevenson, and Sean Rackoski.
