Raleigh County Tax Office Angel Tree beacon for compassionate community

BECKLEY, WV (WOAY) – The Raleigh County Tax Office is again hosting an angel tree for some of its conservator cases.

It lifts the spirits of the protected people (Raleigh County Sheriff is the financial conservator by court appointment) during the holidays and beyond.

“Some are elderly, some of these people are young,” said Jim Canaday, adding that it’s important to let them know they are remembered. We’re very appreciative of this year’s ornaments made by the Crab Orchard Baptist Preschool.”

Each ornament (assigned to different conservator cases) is numbered, marked male or female, with the person’s gift ideas.

“We asked them or their caregivers what they would need,” Canaday said. “And we’ve written that down. All you need to do is pick up the few items.”

Donors can keep the ornament but attach their recipient’s numbered gift card. ‘Angels’ Christmas gifts help the assigned community children and adults in financial hardship.

“If you take the time to wrap or bag each present it seems like they have more to open,” said the sheriff.

Turn your gifts into the Raleigh County Courthouse Tax Office (222 Main St., Beckley) by December 18 at 10 am.

According to Canaday, many courthouse employees have asked if they are doing the angel tree.

“We’ve had a great turnout of people wanting to help these folks,” he said. “So if you’re in the courthouse or just want to stop by — pick up an ornament, wrap some gifts, and bring it back to us.”

What it means to these folks is priceless.

“Just the look on their face when we deliver it to them lets them know they’re not forgotten,” the sheriff said. “I think that’s a blessing of the season.”
