Raleigh County swears in new deputy

On Tuesday morning, Thomas Lafferty was officially sworn in by Judge Todd Kirby as a deputy of the Raleigh County Sheriff’s Department.

Newswatch asked what it will mean for Deputy Lafferty to serve Raleigh County in the coming years.

“I’ve been in law enforcement for approximately the last four and a half years. I started out in Tennessee. My Mom’s originally from West Virginia… I fell in love with the area.”

“My biggest thing in law enforcement since I’ve started has been trying to help juveniles and youths. I had a pretty rough bringing up myself back home in Tennessee. That being said, if I could prevent any other child from having to endure that, they actually have the chance to be a child and grow up, not have to be, you know, in contact with certain substances, certain situations—anything that I could do to prevent that will overall benefit the community and overall make me feel like I’ve accomplished something throughout my career.”

Pending verification that the training from his previous department matches all of Raleigh County’s requirements, Deputy Lafferty plans to complete any training necessary and start serving the community in earnest.
