Beckley, WV (WOAY) The Raleigh County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents about a scam involving people impersonating law enforcement officers.
Officials say scammers may call or leave messages claiming you owe fines and threaten arrest if you don’t pay.
In some cases, they’re asking for payment through gift cards.
The scammers may also use phone apps to make the call appear to come from the Sheriff’s Office or a 304 area code.
They may even use the names of real deputies or staff members to sound legitimate.
The Sheriff’s Office says it never collects fines or payments over the phone.
If you receive a call like this, hang up immediately and do not provide any personal or financial information.
If you’re unsure whether a call is legitimate, contact the Raleigh County Sheriff’s Office directly at 304-255-9300, or visit the office at 308 Ned Payne Drive in Beckley.
Officials say scams like this are happening nationwide and are encouraging residents to stay alert and share the warning with others.
