Beckley, WV (WOAY) The Raleigh County Sheriff’s Office (RCSO) is alerting the community to reports of a phone scam.
RCSO authorities state that individuals have been calling and leaving messages pretending to be deputies, claiming you must pay a fine and threatening arrest if you don’t pay.
Scammers often request payment using gift cards, which is a huge red flag.
Authorities state that scam callers may use phone apps to make the call seem as if it’s from the sheriff’s office and may use the names of real staff and officers to sound more legitimate.
The Raleigh County Sheriff’s Office wants everyone to know that they will never collect fines or payments over the phone.
Residents are advised not provide any personal/financial information and hang up immediately if they receive one of these calls.
Anyone uncertain about a call should call the Raleigh County Sheriff’s Office directly at 304-255-9300 to verify.
You can also stop by the office in person at 308 Ned Payne Drive in Beckley.
