Raleigh County Prosecuting Attorney’s office receiving election day complaints

The majority of government offices will be closed on Election Day, but the Raleigh County Prosecuting Attorney’s office will have limited staff available, specifically for election-related issues.

“The prosecutor’s office will be open on election day from 6:30 in the morning till 7:30 at night. Those are the same hours the polls are open, and we field complaints.”

Prosecuting Attorney Tom Truman says election day complaints are very rare, but the vast majority of them are related to electioneering violations.

“Electioneering, which consists of signs, handing out trinkets, handing out cards, handing out propaganda, can’t take place within 100 feet of the entrance to the polling place. That’s the standard complaint we get.”

Electioneering at the polls is a violation of the law and voters’ rights, but you can still feel free to exercise your First Amendment rights this Tuesday.

“They can absolutely picket. They can campaign for people. It just has to be outside the limits. And the polling places have signs up saying you’re 100 feet from the polling place. And I’ve seen those. And I guess every precinct has them… Just go beyond that, and I think that’ll be within the law.”

For a serious threat or emergency, always call 9-1-1, but if you need to report a violation at the polls, the Raleigh County Prosecuting Attorney’s office can help.
