Raleigh County Healthy Families Alliance & Support Center opens Harper Park Drive location

BECKLEY, WV (WOAY) — Raleigh County Healthy Families Alliance & Support Center has opened a second office on Harper Park Drive in Beckley to support and strengthen families.

This will enhance their ability to offer resources and assistance to a greater scope of Raleigh County.

“There’s so many more people up here that needed us and we were a little too far away from them,” said Director Jennifer McMeekin. “So I’m excited. We’re already partnering with different schools in the Trap Hill area, down in Glen Daniels. And we get to meet and help a lot more people.”

In Raleigh County, there is no such thing as too many places to seek help and guidance. When members of the community learn RCHFASC is there…

“We’re getting more and more referrals,” Office Manager Amelia Van Devender said. “We’re able to reach out to more and more families, and I hear back from them that it means a lot.”

The center tries to strengthen the family unit, help parents get on their feet, and sustain themselves financially and economically.

“The idea is if we can help them sustain while they’re participating in the services — it takes the stress off,” McMeekin said. “At the end of the day, we want families to have security, sustainability and a strong bond. We just want strength.”

This new Harper Road spot will allow them to service a different section of Raleigh County they can’t reach at their Daniels location.

“And be able to provide them with an opportunity to come into the center, receive classes, pantry items if they need it, and just generally have a place to come and be and get help,” said Van Devender.

The center fills many gaps.

“We also provide respite care for foster and kinship placements. We offer bedding for kinship placements. We do single-father programs,” McMeekin said. “We fill in the gaps any family can need, whether it’s a single-parent family or a kinship family. We’re here to help ’em get it together and keep it together.”
