Raleigh County going purple for recovery

BECKLEY, WV (WOAY) – The Raleigh County Commission has declared September 2025 National Recovery Month.

They’re excited to support those in recovery, as well as honor the lives lost due to substance misuse.

Providing support to the community of allies and individuals demonstrates that we’re all one and here in support of one another.

“This is not like any other event Raleigh County has ever had for recovery. Because this is not a resource networking event,” said Bright Life Mental Health & Recovery Services Therapist Amanda Hammons. “It’s not a bunch of organization tables with their names and titles.”

The substance use disorder therapist called this a space where people who work in recovery, live in recovery (and have been doing so for many years) can come and celebrate themselves, their own recovery, the people they’ve helped get into recovery, and the fact that recovery is possible.

“It fills my heart to know Raleigh County Commissioner Greg Duckworth, Linda Epling, and all the others who signed without any hesitation,” Hammons said, of the proclamation for Raleigh County to go purple and support September as Recovery Month.”

According to the SUD therapist, it was relieving.

“It brought our community together almost overnight,” said Hammons. “We talk about breaking stigma. That’s something we’ve had to continuously work with.”
