Raleigh County gears Middle School students up for transition to High School with support from GEAR UP SWV and Vela Institute

Beckley, WV (WOAY)-Raleigh County Schools is launching a new effort to support students during the transition from middle school to high school.

In partnership with GEAR UP Southern West Virginia and the Vela Institute, the district is using research and direct student feedback to better understand what ninth graders need to feel confident and prepared.

Focus groups with rising freshmen across four middle schools revealed a mix of excitement and anxiety, with students eager for new opportunities.

However, students reported being unsure about academics, friendships, and finding trusted adults in high school.

This fall, educators and school leaders reviewed those findings and selected targeted strategies they’re now putting into practice to strengthen academic readiness, belonging, and student confidence.

GEAR UP officials say combining research with real student voices will help more young people thrive not only in ninth grade, but all the way to college and future careers.
