Raleigh County flips Republican for the first time since 1932

RALEIGH COUNTY, WV (WOAY) – For the first time since the election of Franklin Delano Roosevelt, Raleigh County now has more registered Republican voters than Democrats.

According the to the Secretary of State’s Office, as of August 24, there are 19,328 Democrats  and 19,444 Republicans registered.

Mark Harris, the chairman of the Republican party in Raleigh County, says it took a lot of effort and door-knocking over the years, and he says he believes it also has something to do with the fact that Democratic policies no longer line up with West Virginia ideals.

“We’ve got a sizable number of Independents in Raleigh County also, and so we have some that moved from Democrat to Independent, and then we have some that moved form Independent to Republican. Both of those played a role,” Harris said.
