Race for House District 27 heats up after primary results

PRINCETON, WV (WOAY) – The race for West Virginia House District 27 is heating up in Mercer County.

The incumbent Eric Porterfield lost the republican primary, getting just 13.2% of the vote. The Republican front runner is now Marty Gearheart.

On the Democrat side there is Tina Russell, who is a first-time candidate running unopposed. Russell is a hard counter to the current representative, focusing her campaign on increasing funding for needed services.

“I do believe there needs to be an improvement in the living wage. Have some concerns about the roads here too. I think there needs to be more funding that goes to the southern part of the state for road repair for sure. And I’d like to see more access to accessible and affordable healthcare for the people here. Those are some things I care a great deal about,” Russell said.

Russell will go against Marty Gearheart in the election this November.
