Prosperity Road slip worsens, new piling wall needed

PROSPERITY, WV (WOAY) – The outlook for a stretch of Prosperity Road above Beckley Crossroads Mall has gone from bad to worse.

According to the Division of Highways, another section of the road gave way over the weekend and will require a much more involved repair process.

Engineers initially planned to repair the road by driving long, steel bolts into the hillside to stabilize it. However, the additional slip means that plan no longer works.

The slip now stretches 100 feet.

Crews now have to build a piling wall out of steel and concrete and backfill the hillside and rebuild the road surface. A utility pole will also need to be moved.

The Division of Highways says it plans to start work before summer.
