West Virginia (WOAY)-Fire managers at New River Gorge National Park and Preserve plan to conduct a prescribed burn in the Grandview area sometime between October 27 and November 30.Â
The controlled burn will cover about thirty-seven acres near the Grandview visitor center, just east of I-64, about five miles from exit 129.
Officials say weather conditions like wind, humidity, and temperature will determine the exact date of the burn.Â
Fire managers estimate the project will take several hours and aims to prevent the area from turning into a dense forest.
Prescribed burns help protect habitat for declining grassland bird species by encouraging the growth of tall grasses.Â
Park officials stress that burns are carefully planned and only begin under strictly controlled conditions.Â
The burn will not impact traffic on Raleigh County Road 9 North, the road to Grandview.Â
