Polar Swim Tradition Returns to Fayetteville on New Year’s Day 2026

Fayetteville, WV (WOAY) – A chilly tradition is back in Fayetteville this week. The annual New Year’s Day Polar Swim at Fayette Station will take place on Thursday, January 1st, at 1 p.m.

Community members, visitors, and thrill-seekers will gather to jump into the icy water for an exhilarating start to the new year.

Tabitha Stover, Director of Visit Fayetteville, says the event is all about fun and community.
“I think it’s just a really fun tradition. It’s gone on for years, and it’s a good way to kind of see your neighbors and jump into the new year. There’s a lot of belly laughing. I mean, it’s funny to watch people jump in really cold water, and we have a good time. And I think it just sparks joy, as silly as that is. It’s just fun, and it makes you happy even though it’s freezing cold, and it’s a fun tradition.”

There is still time to sign up for this year’s Polar Swim. If jumping into frigid water sounds too daring, visitors are welcome to come watch the fun. Organizers ask spectators to park in the main Fayette Station lot so participants can keep their vehicles close to the river and warm up quickly after their dip.

“When it gets closer and the temperature gets a little colder, people do drop out,” Stover said, “so as of today, we have spots that are open. So give us a call or register online and you still have time to join the fun. And it doesn’t take any athletic ability. We are just dipping in that water and getting out because it’s cold, but it’s a lot of fun.”
