Playoff picture becomes clearer for World TeamTennis

WHITE SULPHUR SPRINGS, WV (WOAY) – With two days left in the regular season for World TeamTennis, three semifinal berths have been claimed, while three teams are still in the running for the final playoff spot.

The Washington Kastles opened the day with a 24-16 win over Springfield, officially taking the Lasers out of playoff contention and ending their bid for a third straight WTT championship. Venus Williams collaborated with Player of the Match Bernarda Pera to win the women’s doubles set 5-2.

Philadelphia is on the verge of securing the top seed in the playoffs after a 24-19 win over San Diego; the Freedoms were led by Taylor Fritz, who needed only 18 minutes to win the men’s singles set to start the match. Also on Tuesday, Orlando clinched a playoff berth following a 23-21 victory over New York in a match that went to extended play.

The results mean New York, Washington, and Orange County are all still eligible for the final playoff spot with each team still to play two matches. The New York Empire and Orange County Breakers face each other at 3 PM Wednesday.
