People weigh in on if they think their state should reopen schools

(WOAY) – When it comes to re-opening schools across the United States, most people are split on the decision.

open or close schools

The map above is based on geotagged Twitter data since August 1st, tracking tweets and hashtags about wanting schools open (in-person learning) or wanting schools closed (virtual/homeschooling) as many questions about COVID-19 still linger. This includes hashtags such as #openschools, #reopenschools, #openschoolsnow, etc. as well as #closeschools, #closeschoolsnow, #keepschoolsclosed etc. Over 120,000 tweets were tracked.

As you can see from the map, there are some definite regional aspects at play (also political lines as well) as the western and northeastern schools seem to want schools closed, while the midwestern and southern states want schools open.

The state count was nearly 50/50 with 26 states favoring open schools, compared to 24 states wanting to keep them closed.

The map was put together by education review site authority.org using trends software with direct access to geotagged Twitter data.
