Orlando edges Springfield in first WTT match at the Greenbrier

WHITE SULPHUR SPRINGS, WV (WOAY) – After weeks of planning and anticipation, World TeamTennis at the Greenbrier Resort became a reality Sunday with the first day of competition.

The opening match of the season saw the two-time defending champion Springfield Lasers face the Orlando Storm; it would be the Storm taking advantage of opportunities in the early going, winning the two singles sets and the men’s doubles sets.

Springfield would rally to win the women’s doubles and mixed doubles sets, bringing up extended play. However, Tennys Sandgren & Jessica Pegula, the two catalysts in Orlando’s quick start, held serve in the first game of extended play to win 21-18; Sandgren was named Player of the Match.

Both Sandgren & Orlando Storm head coach Jay Gooding say they’re comfortable with the safety protocols that have been put in place for the players, coaches, and fans, and are embracing their first time in Southern West Virginia.

Also on Sunday, the Chicago Smash defeated the Vegas Rollers 24-18, and the San Diego Aviators won 23-16 against the Orange County Breakers. Regular season matches continue through July 30.
