SUMMERSVILLE, WV (WOAY)- It’s said that wine is bottled poetry. Music, however, is also described as poetry itself. Well, the Kirkwood Winery is bringing the two together for their 33rd annual festival.
Kirkwood Wine, located in Summerville, will host its annual wine and music festival on September 20th and 21st. Kirkwood Winery has been hosting its wine and music festival for almost as long as it has been in business.
“Well, it started, of course, 33 years ago and as a small festival, they come up and it’s always the third week in September, because that’s the time that the grapes mature. And they always had the grape stomping competitions and it’s for everybody,” said Frank Dix, Owner of Kirkwood Winery. “So it started there and they were playing some, you know, a lot of bluegrass, country music and it’s just grown from there. And today it’s known around the state. We have people that come from everywhere. Last year we actually had people from nine different states here. So it’s it’s got a good reputation. People come, they have fun and they come back every year.”
Kirkwood sells 30 different wines that will all be available for tasting at this event.
“We are a fruit and berry-based winery, so we have a lot of sweet wines. We do have some semi-sweet and some dry wines. We have something for everybody,” explain Dix. “But typically, we like to do a lot of berries, like BlackBerry Raspberry and Blueberry, and fruits like peach and pear. And we also have our grape wines to come from our vineyard, so we do a lot of grape wines too.”
When you’re not trying your next sip of wine, you can relax at the stage and watch a variety of live music. Performers range from local favorites to those on The Voice and American Idol.
Adult tickets start at $25, depending on the day you go. There are also two-day passes available.
“So for a small price, you get to come in, you get a glass, you get to try all the wines. And we also have a little whiskey taste in here because we have a little mini distillery and food vendors, and all day entertainment for a cheap price,” said Dix. “So basically, you know, it’s us here with our wines and a lot of food vendors craft vendors, and, you know, it’s just a real good time. Plenty here for everybody.”
They also will have a 5k at 9 am on Saturday. All the proceeds this year will go to the Nicholas County pool at Memorial Park.
So for the two-day event, there will be something for everyone. You can buy discounted advance tickets online or in person. So if you want a relaxing weekend with wine and music, luckily for you to get there and home only takes a tank of gas.
