One Tank Trip: Dirty Birds Light the Night

CHARLESTON, WV (WOAY)- The holidays are here and with that millions of lights are lit for people to enjoy. GoMart baseball stadium is no exception to that as they host their annual Light the Night event.

The home of the Charleston Dirty Birds wanted to put their stadium to good use and bringing festive cheer was the perfect way.

“We have this amazing, beautiful stadium that’s located so easily for people in the Charleston area on the interstate. You know, it’s so easy to get here. It’s so easy to park here,” explained Andy Shea, Owner and CEO of Charleston Dirty Birds. “And, you know, when you look at a baseball season, it’s six months in a year, which means that we don’t have stuff six months of the year. So little research, little looking around. We’re like, this would be absolutely amazing, and it really has been.”

Guests have the chance to see over 2 and a half million lights in the heart of Charleston. Throughout this display people can walk through the winter forest, visit the beloved game Candy Land, get lost in the maze of lights, stop over at Charleston station to ride the train, visit the fair attractions, ice skate, and meet the big man himself.

What brings you here to Charleston, West Virginia?

“Well, Andy Shea and the Dirty Birds brought me down to entertain the folks here. From now till December the 23rd for Light the Night here at GoMart ballpark,” said Santa Clause.

Why should the lovely people of West Virginia come to this event?

“Well, if you can look around and say there’s plenty to do, there’s ice skating with bumper cars, there’s rides for the kids, there’s 2.5 million lights. So there’s lots to do around here. Plus me, I’m here,” explained Santa Clause.

Planning and preparation for an event such as this is a full-year project.

“Well, so in a way, we started planning it probably three weeks into last year’s event because we’re just saying, hey, I think this would flow better here. I think this would do better here. Hey, I think we need more of this,” explained Shea. “But really and truly throughout the summer is when we were really, really kind of pen-to-paper type thing of mapping it out. This will go here, the train will go down on the field, all that good stuff.”

The event will happen every night, except Christmas day, now through January 1st. You can visit the link below for tickets and times.

So if you want a chance to check out over 2 million lights to get into the festive spirit of the season, then head on over to Dirty Bird Stadium in the heart of Charleston. Luckily for you, you only have to fill up your tank once for this trip.
