October’s National Fire Prevention Week urges residents to take lithium-ion battery safety seriously

West Virginia (WOAY)- From smartphones to power tools, lithium-ion batteries power much of our daily lives.

But did you know they also pose serious fire risks if misused?

As part of Fire Prevention Week, happening October 5-11, the West Virginia State Fire Marshal’s Office is urging residents to take lithium-ion battery safety seriously.

This year’s theme: “Charge into Fire Safety™: Lithium-Ion Batteries in Your Home.”

Lithium-ion batteries are found in phones, laptops, e-cigarettes, toys, and even lawn equipment.

While they’re convenient, they can overheat, catch fire, or even explode if damaged or misused.

To protect yourself and your family, follow three simple steps:

Buy safely by choosing products that meet national safety standards.

Charge safely by using the cords that came with the device. Never charge on a bed, pillow, or couch.

Finally, recycle responsibly by never throwing lithium-ion batteries in the trash, as they can spark a fire.

“They’re just about everywhere,” says State Fire Marshal Ken Tyree, “and that’s why it’s critical to understand the risks.”
