Nuttallburg Headhouse Trail temporarily closed for engineering evaluation

Fayette County, WV (WOAY)—The National Park Service announces that the Nuttallburg Headhouse Trail will be temporarily closed to the public from 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on weekdays starting Tuesday, May 6.

The closure will be in effect until Thursday, May 15.

The trail will remain open on Saturday and Sunday during that period.

The closure is necessary for contractors to conduct an engineering evaluation at the historic Nuttallburg coal mine site.

Crews will operate vehicles and drilling equipment along the trail to assess site conditions and plan for future hazard mitigation efforts.

Officials urge visitors to respect closure signs and avoid the area during working hours to ensure safety for workers and the public.

The project is part of ongoing efforts to preserve the former coal mining site’s cultural and historical integrity while addressing safety concerns.

Visitors can check the New River Gorge National Park and Preserve website or contact park staff for updates and more information.
