Number of overdose deaths is decreasing

Kanawha County, WV (WOAY) – Numbers released by the West Virginia Office of Drug Control show progress in the fight against drug addiction, but there is still work to be done.

The number of overdose deaths decreased significantly from 2023 to 2024. There were 1400 overdose deaths in 2023, and 816 in 2024.

The state reported a nearly sixty percent decrease in opioid prescription drug dispensing.

That decrease has been seen in our local counties.

Fayette County saw 35 overdose deaths in 2023 and 22 in 2024. Raleigh County saw a decrease in overdose deaths from 113 in 2023 to 52 in 2024.

More than 130,000 naloxone kits were distributed statewide.
