OAK HILL, WV (WOAY) – We’re celebrating those who make the City of Oak Hill a better place.
You have until October 18 to nominate your local hero (an individual or business) for the 2024 Spirit of Oak Hill Award.
“We just want the community to nominate people that they see doing great things for Oak Hill that’s not associated with their job,” said city manager Damita Johnson. “It’s just because they love Oak Hill, they love the community, and they want to do things that help all of us.”
Johnson says most of the people who win the Spirit of Oak Hill Award don’t like to be noticed.
“But I know people out there see them picking up trash or organizing events and trying to have fun things for the community,” the city manager said. “So that’s the kind of people we want to know about.”
In the three years since they launched this award, the Oak Leaf Festival’s Saundie Smith was the first recipient and the last recipient was Brett Compton.
“He is heavily involved with little league baseball; he does a lot of other things and gives his time freely,” said Johnson. “Steve Vaynes, for all that he did for the football teams and the high schools. We’ve also honored some businesses, Black Bear Bakery.”
A committee will look over the nomination submissions and pick a winner — announced at November 4th’s council meeting.
“Go to the Oak Hill website, the form is there. It has all the information we need (from you) and if you can’t get on the website, call us — we’ll get one to you,” the city manager said.
