Nine area golfers qualify for West Virginia Amateur

WOAY – Qualifying for the 101st West Virginia Amateur began earlier this week, with the second of six events held Friday at Pipestem Resort State Park.

18 spots were at stake with 63 golfers taking part, many of them from Southern West Virginia. Beckley’s Jonathan Handy posted the low round of the day with a five-under score of 67. The top three in the qualifier were all from our area: Jeff McGraw (Princeton) finished -2, while Oak Hill’s Nathaniel Begley finished -1.

17 golfers qualified following their rounds Friday, with seven more golfers going to a playoff for the final berth. Chapmanville’s Jacob Workman would advance on the third playoff hole.

The 101st West Virginia Amateur is scheduled for July 28-31 at the Greenbrier Resort; golfers will alternate rounds between the Meadows and Old White TPC courses.
