Summersville, WV (WOAY) – The Nicholas County Humane Society is hosting a one-of-a-kind pet adoption event this Saturday where the animals, not the people, make the first move.
“Paws Choose You” runs from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Summersville Arena and Conference Center in Summersville. The centerpiece of the event is indicated by its very name, where dogs are let loose in a circle and allowed to approach potential adopters on their own terms.
Kayla Farley, Director of the Nicholas County Humane Society, said each dog will be given about a 30-minute session, and attendees will receive a description of each animal before it enters the circle.
“This event is going to be different from all of the other ones because we are planning to do from 11 to 2 to where like we’ve got a big circle set up and the dogs like can be let loose in a circle and choose you which a description of each dog will be given,” Farley said.
Attendees who feel a dog may not be the right fit for their household can opt out and give up their spot to someone else. Cats, dogs, and possibly puppies will all be available for adoption. Organizers have also invited other local rescue shelters to participate.
Admission is by donation only. Accepted donations include pet food, cat litter, cleaning supplies, toys, treats, and blankets.
The event also has something to offer for current pet owners. Vendors on site will include dog obedience trainers, hunting supply dealers, and a grooming company offering free nail trims. A Nicholas County Humane Society representative will be on hand to sign spay and neuter discount forms.
