OAK HILL, WV (WOAY) – Once again, today’s weather was very nice around the region. It was a shade warmer than yesterday, and that warming trend will continue tonight and tomorrow. Lows tonight will be in the lower 60s, with upper 50s in the Greenbrier Valley and Pocahontas County. There will be more clouds around, but partly cloudy skies will be the rule.
Tomorrow will be a similar day to today in terms of sunshine. With the slight warm-up mentioned above, highs will be in the 80s in most areas outside of the highest elevations. With the winds shifting to a more southerly direction, there will also be a bit more humidity. Tomorrow night’s lows will be in the mid-60s.
The next chance for showers and storms will be Thursday as a front moves into the area from the northwest. There will be plenty of moisture for the front to work with, so there will be concerns for flooding with the storms as they drop heavy rain at times. The heaviest rain will be in the northern and western parts of our region. The Weather Prediction Center has placed that part of the area in a Level 2 out of 4 for flash flooding, meaning there is a 15 to 40% chance of flash flooding. The rest of the area is in a Level 1 out of 4 (less than a 15% chance).
The other types of severe weather will not be as much of a concern as they were last Friday. A squall line over Ohio and northern West Virginia is expected to produce strong to severe storms there.
It is expected to weaken quite a bit before it arrives, but it will still have heavy rain attached.
Our Futurecast is expecting the secondary line of storms to be stronger than the first for most of our area. I think the model is overdoing it here, but it’s something that we’ll be tracking.
The rain will get lighter as the line moves south but will still be heavy enough at times to cause some issues with standing and ponding water. Almost the entire area is in the Level 1 out of 4 risk for flash flooding from Friday into Saturday (again, a less than 15% chance). As we’ve looked at the latest data, the timing has changed slightly. While most of the showers and storms should be gone in time for the Friday night football games, there will be some still hanging around, so the rain gear will be a good idea.
After the front is gone, the weather dries out, but not for long, with another system hard on the heels of the first. Rain chances during the weekend will be high on Saturday with this next system, dropping slightly on Sunday.
While neither day will be a washout, it would be wise to have an indoor alternative just in case it rains. We finally dry out next Monday, but that doesn’t last long either; rain returns as we end the extended forecast. Temperatures will remain above normal through the end of the seven-day forecast, although a bit cooler than they’ll be the first couple of days.
