New River Gorge announces prescribed burn at Sandstone Visitor Center

Oak Hill, WV (WOAY)- The New River Gorge National Park and Preserve fire managers announce a prescribed burn at the Sandstone Visitor Center.

Fire managers plan to burn five acres between February 19 and March 31.

Wind speed, direction, humidity, and other factors will determine the exact day of the burn.

The planned fire will be located just north of I-64 and Route 20 interchange (exit 139).

Travelers on Summers County Route 7 Meadow Creek road may experience temporary delays during fire operations.

The Sandstone Visitor Center and parking lot will be closed during the burn, estimated to take several hours to complete.

The facilities will reopen after the project and a safety clearance are completed.

The purpose of this prescribed burn is to maintain native grassland habitat, provide food and nesting space for birds and other grassland wildlife and discourage the spread of invasive species.
