Fayette County, WV (WOAY) – Hikers will find it easier to park in one of the New River Gorge’s most popular hiking trails.
The new overflow parking lot has been added to the Endless Wall Trail, making additional parking for visitors who use the trail that normally sees increased traffic, according to the park rangers.
To access the new parking area, hikers are directed to drive on Lansing-Edmond Road the previously established parking areas for Fern Creek and Nuttall, following the signs that pointing to “Endless Wall Trail Main Parking.”
Due to their smaller size, Fern Creek and Nuttall lots have a history of filling up quickly, forcing visitors to resort to parking alongside the gravel curb of Lansing-Edmond Road, according to park rangers. Visitors are now being asked to not park along the edge of Lansing-Edmond Road to avoid traffic congestion and impassable conditions on a residential road.
If the Fern Creek lot is full, hikers are directed to drive a half mile to the Nuttall parking lot to check for availability. If Nuttall is also full, drivers are asked to drive just a few hundred more feet to the newer and larger parking lot.
Park officials suggest alternatives for hikers such as using the spur trails from the new lot to the portion of the Endless Wall trail that starts from the Nuttall lot rather than walking along the road back to their parking spot.
