WOAY-TV (Oak Hill, WV): This morning is much calmer than yesterday, but there are some issues affecting the morning commute. We have noted high water causing road closures across the region, especially in Fayette County. Foggy conditions are also developing, which makes things that much more complicated. Please be careful, look for road closures, and do not drive into flood waters. It is not worth the risk.
We expect a couple of rounds of weather today, which will continue the flood risk across our region. The first will arrive later this morning as a cluster of storms moves southeast from Cincinnati, Ohio. While the main portion of this storm likely misses us, some heavier rain and a gusty storm or two is possible in the southern coalfields. This afternoon will remain a bit calmer, but there is potential for a few scattered storms to form.
Storms will return overnight as the next round moves into the region, which will impact more of the viewing area. Flooding remains a concern since rainfall will be plenty enough for additional flooding issues to arise. Have multiple ways to receive alerts and be careful if you are commuting overnight or early tomorrow morning. Meteorologist Christian Boteler has the latest details:
The stormy pattern will continue through the rest of the work week, which will cause flooding issues across the viewing area. Many areas have already felt the storm’s impact, and potentially heavy rain will add to the current problems. Thursday is trending to carry the highest rainfall potential as multiple rounds of storms pass through. While timing is not a absolute certainty, storms will most likely arrive in the morning and again during the overnight hours. Scattered storms are also possible in the afternoon, similar to today.
Friday remains rainy, especially in the morning and afternoon. Storm strength will be limited for the second half of the work week, but that does not mean rain will not be heavy. Storms will finally start to fade during the evening and overnight hours, finally bringing the widespread threat to a halt. I am expecting at least a few flash flood warnings over the next couple of days. Stay weather aware, have multiple ways to receive alerts, and be prepared for potential issues.
A brief high-pressure system will move in this weekend, which will keep any showers or storms scattered at worst. Both Saturday and Sunday show potential for some afternoon and evening storms, but rain should remain lighter. We are still watching for an outside threat of flooding, but this should remain localized. Next week, a cold front will blow in Monday before we finally get a drier day at the end of our extended forecast.
