Monroe County, WV (WOAY) – Monroe County Health officials are currently investigating an outbreak of whooping cough.
According to a media release posted on the Monroe County Health Department Facebook page, an individual recently diagnosed with whooping cough (Pertussis) spent time at a local business in Lindside, WV, during their infectious period, which was May 9, 2025, through June 16, 2025.
Whooping cough is a highly contagious bacterial infection that impacts the respiratory system. It causes inflammation and swelling of the airways. Individuals spread the infection by spreading droplets through coughing or sneezing. Symptoms can be mild and often resemble that of a common cold, such as runny nose or mild cough. The sickness can progress with the cough becoming more severe and uncontrollable often followed by a “whooping” sound.
Health officials say whooping cough can impact people of all ages but is most dangerous for children under 6 years of age.
According to the media release, Pertussis is preventable with vaccination. It is also treatable with antibiotics.
