Fayette County, WV (WOAY) – There will be a public meeting in Minden on June 2 at 6 p.m. at the Minden Community Center located at 179 McKinney Road in Minden.
The meeting will kick off the public comment portion of the soil and sediment plan for operable unit 2.
The purpose is to solicit public comment for a proposed remedy for the remaining soil and sediment project areas that are not included as part of operable unit 1, which is essentially the former Shaffer Equipment Company site, and those plans are currently in the design phase.
From approximately 1970 to 1983, the Shaffer Equipment Company in Minden mismanaged electrical transformers, which resulted in the release of toxic PCBs into the environment.
In the mid 80’s, the EPA conducted its first removal action in response and has conducted at least 3 more since, with the last as recently as 2020.
There are no committed funds currently, at this time but it is expected to be a 90 – 10 split. With the 90 coming from the EPA, and the state providing the other 10 percent.
The EPA has kept in close contact with the city of Oak Hill during the process.
