Fayette County, WV (WOAY) – We have major news from Fayette County, where Governor Patrick Morrisey says the state and federal government will spend a total of four million dollars for environmental cleanup in Minden.
In a press release today, Governor Morrisey said the state is contributing two million dollars, and the federal government will match the funds.
The clean-up will happen at the Arbuckle Creek Superfund site, where transformers placed by Schaffer Equipment Company contaminated the soil from 1970 to 1984.
The transformers leaked chemicals that increase the risk of cancer and cause reproductive issues.
The West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection will work with the EPA on the project.
In a statement, Governor Patrick Morrisey said quote, “This cleanup is a long-overdue investment in the health and safety of Minden residents. Thanks to the collaboration among federal, state, and local partners, we are taking meaningful steps to protect West Virginians from dangerous chemicals.”
We will continue to follow this story.
