Fayette County, WV (WOAY) – There was a public meeting in Minden Tuesday night where the EPA presented their proposed remedial action plan for the soil and sediment portion of what they call operable unit two.
This is not to be confused with operable unit one, which was essentially the old Shaffer Equipment site, which had been previously capped.
Operable unit two is essentially all the other locations of the designated superfund site.
For the residents of Minden, this was yet another public meeting regarding PCB contamination stemming from the Shaffer Equipment Company’s mismanagement of electrical transformers they built for the coal mining industry, which resulted in extremely large amounts of toxic PCBs into the surrounding environment.
Although the site is not officially considered a cancer cluster site by federal or state agencies, the residents of Minden tend to think it is.
