WOAY – Hear from PikeView girls basketball head coach Karen Miller, as high school basketball teams whose seasons have not yet officially ended await the decision on whether to continue the postseason basketball tournaments.
Nine area basketball squads are still in contention to win a state championship – four girls’ teams (Greenbrier East, PikeView, Summers County, Woodrow Wilson) and five boys’ teams (Bluefield, Greater Beckley Christian, Independence, Shady Spring, Westside). WVSSAC Executive Director Bernie Dolan said a final decision on the postseasons could be made as early as next week.
Miller says it’s important that the tournaments do continue, teams should make sure to stay conditioned during the extended break. She also has compassion for the senior players who may not be able to finish their high school basketball playing careers on the court.
WOAY Sports will have more stories over the next few days on how basketball teams are dealing with the unexpected pause to the season. We will also have stories soon on how spring sports are affected.
