On the first day of Meteorological Fall, it has been a pleasant and cool day around southern West Virginia. Temperatures in our area are topping out in the upper 60s and lower 70s, while travelers to other parts of the state or to areas in other states are seeing the thermometer top out in the upper 70s and lower 80s.
Overall, the weather is good for traveling in most destinations, although there are some showers to our southwest along I-40 and I-81. Tonight, we’ll drop into the upper 40s and lower 50s around the area, as the cool trend continues.
Tomorrow will be a nearly perfect day around the region. After the cool start, temperatures rebound nicely, and by the end of the day, we’ll see highs in the mid-70s. That’s not quite as warm as it should be. We’ll also see mostly sunny skies. Later tomorrow night, a chance for showers returns to the forecast with a weak disturbance pushing into the area from the northwest.
Showers should generally be scattered tomorrow night, but a much better chance for rain is in the forecast later this week as a fairly vigorous front pushes into the region. The chance for rain is very high and there is plenty of moisture for the storms to work with.
The Weather Prediction Center is putting parts of the area at a 5% risk for flooding rainfall from Thursday morning until Friday morning. I think the main threat is the more typical standing water in low-lying spots and ponding water on the roads. We haven’t had much rain lately, except yesterday, when one of the scattered showers and storms that popped up did so over the Raleigh County Memorial Airport. In the eight days before that, we had only seen 0.04″ of rain in Beckley. Some of the storms could also be on the strong side, but severe weather is not expected.
After the front is gone, a cooldown had been anticipated, but it appears that the coldest air will be confined to areas to our north. Highs and lows will cool down slightly by early next week, as a reinforcing shot of cool air invades the region on Saturday. The front that it is attached to has little to no moisture to work with, and so a dry frontal passage is expected.
