MERCER COUNTY, WV (WOAY) – Mercer County Schools says all school-sponsored travel for students outside of the State has been suspended, due to coronavirus.
With the spread of COVID-19 across the nation, it is important that we take action to protect our students from exposure to the virus and to mitigate the possibility of the virus spreading to our communities.
Mercer County Schools is taking the following actions:
1) School-sponsored travel for students outside the state has been suspended.
a) Efforts are being made to reschedule trips at a later date;
b) Travel for a field trip and athletic events to the three (3) counties in Virginia contiguous to Mercer County, Bland, Giles, and Tazewell, will be allowed.
2) County-sponsored travel for professional development outside the state has been suspended.
3) Schools are continuing to use the same precautions that we have used for the regular flu and other virus protection including:
a) Regular cleaning and disinfecting of desks, computer keyboards, doorknobs, water fountains, etc.;
b) Thorough handwashing is monitored at the elementary level and middle and high school students are reminded of the importance of thorough handwashing, and
c) School nurses are working with schools on instructive handwashing and cough etiquette.
