Mercer County Deputies respond to shooting

Princeton, WV (WOAY) – Deputies are investigating a suspicious person’s complaint that resulted in a shooting.

According to a press release from Lieutenant Steven A. Sommers, at 11:58 p.m. on Friday March 7, 2025, Deputies with the Mercer County Sheriff’s Department were called to investigate a suspicious person’s complaint on Rocky Branch Road. A witness told deputies that she had seen two people with flashlights walking on her neighbor’s property and then the lights disappeared.

While speaking with the witness, dispatchers notified Deputies on March 8, 2025, at approximately 12:33 am that an elderly male had shot someone who had broken into his home in the same area.

A 35-year-old female from the Princeton area died as a result of the shooting.

Deputy M. C. Altice and Detective J. M. Pinter are lead investigators on the case. No arrests have been made at this time.
