Mercer County, WV (WOAY) – Two new ordinances in a local county will help control the animal population and prevent pets from getting loose out of homes.
The Mercer County Commission passed two new ordinances yesterday at the county commission meeting. One ordinance is a spay and neuter ordinance to help control strays and the selling of puppies who aren’t registered breeders.
Owners in Mercer County must have their pets spayed or neutered unless they have paid a fee not to do so. The animal control ordinance states that the owner must control the animals they have in their possession at all times.
They did eliminate language, saying the animal must be tethered or on a leash, but must be controlled in some manner.
There are still things to be worked out with hiring more people to enforce the law and certain financial backing, but county commissioner Greg Puckett says it’s something they’ve needed in the county for a while.
