MERCER COUNTY, WV (WOAY) – The Community Emergency Response Team in Mercer County starts a go fund me to support local first responders.
For $25,000, the group hopes to buy radios, PPE, a vehicle and non-perishable foods to support communities and first responders in case of natural disasters, emergency situations and the ongoing pandemic.
The volunteer-based team started after a flood in the Athens area led Nicholas Fields to realize a need in the community.
“People were stranded and couldn’t get out of their driveways,” said Fields, who organized the CERT GoFundMe. “The roads were washed out and we needed non-perishables, water and resources we couldn’t get to. Mercer County [had] their hands tied helping other people, and I totally understand. Therefore, we came together and decided we needed to start a CERT, that way the whole community could come together and help each other out.”
