McDowell County, State Fire Marshal to honor firefighter who fell in the line of duty

Charleston, WV (WOAY) – The WV State Fire Marshal will honor a fallen firefighter on February 21, 2025.

A procession to honor Deputy Chief Jeffrey Lawson of the War Volunteer Fire Department will begin at 11am on Friday.

While travelling a fire on Monday, February 17, 2025, 54-year-old Deputy Chief Jeffrey Lawson of the War fire department became ill and needed medical attention. While on the way to the hospital the Lawson became unconscious, and CPR was initiated. Deputy Chief Lawson was pronounced dead at the hospital.

The procession will leave 1101 Bigley Avenue in Charleston at 11am.
Once on Bigley Avenue, the procession will merge onto Pennsylvania Avenue South to the intersection of Lee Street.
The procession will turn left on Lee Street and then left on Pennsylvania Ave North.
Once on Pennsylvania Avenue North, the procession will enter the interstate via the ramp in front of Women’s and Children’s hospital and proceed south on I-77.
The procession will continue south on I-77 by utilizing the WV Turnpike. The procession will exit the WV Turnpike at exit 42 in Raleigh County.
After exiting the WV Turnpike, the procession will continue onto WV Route 16 south in the direction of the Town of Sophia. Once in Sophia the procession will merge onto the Coalfields Expressway and continue to the Town of Mullens.
After exiting the Coalfields Expressway in the Town of Mullens, the procession will turn right onto Route 54 north and travel 3.4 miles and then turn left on Route 97 west.
The procession will follow Route 97 west to the Town of Pineville. Once in Pineville the procession will proceed through town and turn onto Route 16 south towards Welch.
Once in Welch the procession will end at Douglas Mortuary located at 157 Wyoming Street.
Law Enforcement Officers from the State Fire Marshal’s Office and other agencies will lead the procession. Arrangements have been made with other emergency service agencies to control certain intersections along the route. Please follow their directions should you come through the areas at that time.
All are welcome to line the route of the procession to show honor and respect in a safe manner. Do not block any roads or intersections. Standing along the side of the interstate is not permitted.
