McDowell County Board of Education transfers ownership of former Welch elementary school building to the City of Welch

The Welch Courthouse, visible at the center-left of the photo, marks the site where Police Chief Sid Hatfield was assassinated in 1921, a pivotal moment that reignited the West Virginia Mine Wars.

Welch, WV (WOAY) The former Welch Elementary School now belongs to the city.

The McDowell County Board of Education met this morning and officially transferred ownership of the former school to the City of Welch.

The move will allow city officials to proceed with plans to bring new life to the building by repurposing the facility for future community projects and events.
