Mavericks Win Opening Game of Regionals

WOAY (Greater Beckley-Charleston Catholic video courtesy WCHS) – James Monroe won the opening game of the Class AA Region 3 championship Monday in Lindside, rallying to win 11-6 against Independence.

The Patriots posted four runs in the opening inning, with Fisher Horton and Hunter Mills establishing momentum with back-to-back doubles. The Mavericks would score one in the bottom of the inning, before taking the lead with five runs in the second.

Game two of the best-of-three series is Tuesday in Coal City.

In Class A, Greater Beckley and Charleston Catholic went to 13 innings before the Irish won 8-7 on a walk-off sacrifice fly. The Crusaders took the lead with three runs in the top of the fourth, and rallied in the late innings of regulation to tie the game at 7-7 before the Irish went on to win. The second game of this series is scheduled for Tuesday in Beckley.

In Class AAA, Greenbrier East’s opening game of their regional with St. Albans was postponed due to the weather, and will be played at 6:30 Tuesday evening. Game two of this series is scheduled for Wednesday in Fairlea.
