Coal City, WV (WOAY) – James Monroe clinched the Class AA Region 3 championship for a second straight following a 13-1 win Thursday against Independence.
The Mavericks established momentum early, with a Grant Mohler two-run home run opening the scoring. They would add three more in the opening frame, and although Independence would counter in the bottom of the first by loading the bases with one out, a double play kept the game at 5-0 after one.
James Monroe added six runs in the third inning, while Independence was able to score in the bottom of the frame.
James Monroe joins Bridgeport and Wayne in the Class AA state tournament, with Weir and Frankfort to play the deciding game of their series Friday.
In Class AAA, St. Albans also established early momentum in Game 2 of their series with Greenbrier East, going on to win 11-0. The Red Dragons will defend their state championship at Appalachian Power Park in Charleston next week.
