Marshall postpones fall Olympic sports

HUNTINGTON, WV (WOAY) – Marshall University announced Friday that its fall Olympic sports teams would have their seasons postponed. The announcement comes after the NCAA announced all fall sports championships across all divisions would be moved to the spring.

This affects the teams for volleyball, men’s and women’s soccer, men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s golf and women’s tennis.

“Even though I’m disappointed that our teams won’t be able to play this fall, I understand and support the decision to postpone until spring, which gives our student-athletes an opportunity to compete for championships. With so many other conferences postponing as well, we were unable to schedule an acceptable amount of contests. We hope to be able to do that in the spring,” director of athletics Mike Hamrick said in a statement.

Marshall football is unaffected by this decision, with the Thundering Herd scheduled to host Eastern Kentucky September 5. No decision has yet been made regarding fan attendance.

Also on Friday, the NCAA ruled that student-athletes on fall sports teams would be granted an extra year of eligibility due to the altered seasons.
