WOAY – Marshall athletic director Mike Hamrick announced Monday that the Thundering Herd football team will host Appalachian State Saturday, September 19 at Edwards Stadium in Huntington.
This will be the 23rd all-time meeting between the Mountaineers and the Herd, but the first game where both teams play in Division I FBS. Appalachian State leads the all-time series 14-8, but Marshall won the two most recent meetings, including 50-17 in Huntington in 2002.
Marshall was originally scheduled to travel to Ohio on September 19, but that game was canceled when the Mid-American Conference decided to postpone all fall sports. The Thundering Herd currently have nine games on their 2020 schedule, including two non-conference opponents. Their season opener is slated for September 12 at East Carolina.
Appalachian State is coming a season where they went 13-1, winning the Sun Belt Conference title and finishing the year ranked in the top 20 of both major polls; they beat two Conference USA teams (Charlotte and UAB) in 2019. Head coach Shawn Clark is originally from Charleston, and will be in his first full year as a head coach.
