Beckley, WV (WOAY) – Marshall baseball began its final weekend of the regular season Thursday at Epling Stadium, but it was Southern Mississippi celebrating a 10-2 win that clinched a Conference USA regular season championship.
The Golden Eagles capitalized on opportunities early, scoring a pair of runs in the first inning, followed by five in the second. Marshall answered with four straight singles, all with two outs, to bring in two runs to close the deficit to 7-2.
However, Southern Mississippi pitcher Nick Sandlin allowed only seven hits, striking out eight in eight innings. Ryan Falls, Marshall’s pitcher of record, pitched the first two innings, before being relieved by Mark Meyer and later Philip Hoffman.
The Thundering Herd and Golden Eagles continue their series Friday at 1 PM at Epling Stadium.
