Beckley, WV (WOAY) – He had a storied law enforcement career. Now, after 34 years — Raleigh County Sheriff’s Department Captain James Bare is stepping into a well-earned retirement.
From DUI enforcement to accomplished detective and supervising the entire road patrol division, Bare made a real difference in Raleigh County crime.
The captain looks back on his decades-long law enforcement journey that started in 1991.
“No take-home cars. We had no office. We had to clock in at the time, cards and all that,” said Bare. “It was vastly different. I’m very proud of what I’ve been able to be part of, to grow it to where it is now.”
The captain’s son is following in his footsteps and calls his dad an inspiration.
“It’s good to see a light at the end of it, and that I’ll be able to hopefully be here that long and have as much impact as he had,” Deputy Colton Bare said.
Captain Bare’s police work helped lead to successful prosecutions of some bad individuals throughout his career, including many child criminals.
According to James, he is proud to have gotten those people away from their victims and prevented them from victimizing anyone else.
If you are interested in entering law enforcement, the Raleigh County Sheriff’s Office captain has some advice.
“(Must) be willing to put up with everything you have to deal with,” said Captain Bare. “Nowadays, social media and the constant barrage from people who don’t like the police. You have to have the heart for it and desire to help people.”
Bare says working under seven sheriffs has always been an adjustment.
“They all have different visions and ideas on how they want to do things,” the captain said. “It’s not difficult because the men that work here are hard workers and good guys.”
Deputy Colton couldn’t be prouder of his father: the man, the captain.
“Watching him, knowing he’s out there doing good, made me want to do the same thing,” said Colton.
The captain gained lifelong friendships and much more at the Raleigh County Sheriff’s Department.
“You guys are family; truly love every one of you… if ever you need anything from me (I’m here),” Bare said.
