Local Spin on the 125 Year Anniversary of U.S.’s Coldest Winter Blast

WOAY-TV (Oak Hill, WV): This week marks the coldest blast ever recorded in the Lower 48.

Chief Meteorologist Chad Merrill has more:

An Arctic high pushed south from the Arctic Circle and enveloped the U.S. with bitterly cold temperatures. The only wind chills above 0 degrees in the entire U.S. were south of Orlando and along the Interstate 5 corridor in the West.

Locally, wind chills plummeted to 20 to 40 degrees below zero and February 10, 1899 marked the coldest morning with temperatures ranging from 10 to 20 degrees below zero degrees.

This is just a friendly reminder that despite the turn towards cooler temperatures for mid-February, we could see much colder readings!
